Surly Crab

The Surly Crab is a modern Pacific Northwest waterfront residence that appears to float just steps above the oyster‑shell‑strewn shoreline of Hood Canal. Its main floor is suspended from a monolithic concrete fireplace that anchors the home to the land, lifting the primary level above the beach. Beneath this elevated floor, the outdoor fireplace and covered seating area, family room, water‑sports storage, and the home’s namesake speakeasy, the Surly Crab, sit nestled among beach grass and driftwood. Above them, the main level gathers the primary social spaces, where the living, dining, and kitchen areas are framed by expansive views of Hood Canal and the Olympic Mountains, with their fjord‑like valleys beyond. Set back into the forest, the upper level which contains the Primary Suite and Guest Suites are conceived as modern tree houses. Perched above the revegetated forest floor, these rooms offer not only sweeping views to the west but also more intimate experiences of the forest canopy and the comings and goings of its inhabitants. In the Primary Bathroom, a cantilevered shower and soaking tub create an al fresco, arboreal bathing experience: glass doors on two sides retract to evoke the sensation of floating among the trees.
